Since so many different disciplines make up the field of gerontology, it's hard to say exactly how many people work in this profession.

There are approximately 6,000 members in the Gerontology Society of America.

David Haber works with the health promotion and gerontology department at the University of Texas in Galveston. He says the outlook for the field of gerontology is excellent. "Just look at the demographics."

Vincent Mor of Brown University says that in the area of administration (housing projects, assisted living and nursing homes), the average salary is between $45,000 and $120,000.

Senior researchers can make between $90,000 and $150,000, and junior investigators can make between $55,000 and $85,000.
