The American Society of Notaries has more than 20,000 members.
It's better to work for someone and get experience before setting out on
your own," advises notary Lyle Standish.
Competition between attorneys and notaries, combined with dispute resolution
systems, make this a competitive job market, says the American Notaries Society.
The Association of Notaries Public estimates that 10 percent of notaries
are self-employed -- they can charge for the notarization and any travel required.
Notaries employed by other people work an eight-hour day. Self-employed
notaries can work overtime and weekends, depending on client needs. "Only
about 25 percent of my work is done on site. I put around 1,000 miles a week
on my car traveling to clients' homes," states Standish.
The U.S. Department of Labor does not have a specific salary for notary
public at this time, but includes this occupation in the category Office and
Administrative Support Workers.
