Additional Information

To be a notary, you must be a resident of the state, be at least 18 years of age, read and write English, have no criminal convictions or license revocations and pass a written exam. In Louisiana, you must be an attorney or pass a rigorous examination.

Learn the law. You'll be working with many legal terms and processes and your invaluable legal knowledge will protect you and your client.

"Take your role as a notary seriously, and be aware that knowledge of state law and sound notarial practices will protect [you] from liability," says Carol Eisman, public affairs coordinator for the Association of Notaries Public.
