Insider Info

In the navy, there are two types of sonar technician duties: surface sonar on ships and submerged sonar on submarines. Currently, women can only apply to work with surface sonar.

"As of right now, women are not allowed on submarines," says sonar technician Jason James. "This may change, but right now they're disqualified from that work."

Educational requirements for recruits will continue to rise. "The navy is always actively looking for new recruits," says James.

"You move up in the ranks with experience."

Earnings and employment information from the U.S. Department of Labor is not available for this field at this time.
