Sonar technicians must first enter the navy.

In the U.S., enlistees must be between the ages of 17 and 35. They must be U.S. citizens or immigrant aliens holding permanent resident status. And they must have no felony record.

Recruits must also complete academic and physical testing. These days, most applicants are high school graduates. After six to 11 weeks of basic training, additional training is given at technical schools.
