Real-Life Communication

Strong communication skills are absolutely essential for publicists. Not only do you have to speak clearly and convincingly, you also have to put your best foot forward in writing.

Communicating in writing can mean composing a press release through traditional means (by typewriter, word processor or computer) or it can mean communicating with clients through e-mail.

"When I need to find out something or contact someone for an appointment, I start with e-mail," says publicist Kim Bayne. "I try to narrow down my points to three brief items I want to convey. That keeps it simple."

Want to try your hand at writing a press release? If you were promoting an author's writing workshop and wanted to compose a press release to announce the event, how would you write it?

Things you'll need to include:

  • Who is having the workshop (author's name)
  • Author information
  • Title of workshop
  • Details of workshop presentation
  • Location of workshop
  • Date and time of event
  • Contact information
