Although B and B operators are not required to take educational courses,
they're a good idea.
"You probably can [just open a B and B], but if it's something you're looking
into as a longtime occupation, with the way online reviews are, you want to
know what you're doing," says Ingrid Thorson with the Professional Association
of Innkeepers International (PAII). "One negative word can really harm you."
Richard Moseley agrees. He's been in the hospitality business for more
than 40 years, and started running his own B and B five years ago. "I'd say
it's almost mandatory (to take courses), but that doesn't happen because a
lot of people just get this dreamy idea of starting a business and leaving
their hectic work," says Moseley.
Taking courses helps you start off on the right foot. Fortunately, you
won't have to look far for help when you're starting out.
"For the person that's looking to get into the business, there are plenty
of choices for training," says Thorson.
The PAII offers courses at its annual convention and at various regional
shows throughout the year. Many state associations also offer courses.
It is also a good idea to take a food safety course. Depending on where
you live, such a course might be mandatory. You should check with your state
health department.
