Additional Information

It's a good idea to get sales experience before you get into selling cars. Selling something on a smaller scale -- be it clothes, encyclopedias or electronics -- is a good test of whether or not selling is in your blood.

There are people with a wide variety of backgrounds selling cars. "I'm sure there are people with not much education and people with lots of education working at car dealerships," says Blair Qualey. He is the president and CEO of a car dealers' association.

According to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), an American association for new car and truck dealerships, licencing requirements vary from state to state. NADA says that having good people skills is most important. You can learn about vehicles on the job. They add that more dealerships are requiring a two- or four-year college degree.
