Beyond High School

Here's a list of programs that you should consider if you're interested in this career:

Education Level

Education training and experience are required at different levels for success in different occupations.

Post-secondary training, plus work experience

Ship captains typically complete U.S. Coast Guard-approved training programs to help them obtain their required credentials. Employers may prefer to hire workers who have earned a bachelor’s degree from a merchant marine academy.

Extra Requirements

Mariners working on ships with U.S. flags usually need a TSA Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Mariners who work on ships traveling on the open ocean require USCG-verified training for the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) endorsement. Most mariners also must have a U.S. Coast Guard-issued Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
