Beyond High School

Here's a list of programs that you should consider if you're interested in this career:

Education Level

Education training and experience are required at different levels for success in different occupations.

High school preferred, plus moderate length, on-the-job training

There are no educational requirements for entry-level sailors and marine oilers and receive on-the-job training. Length of training depends on the size and type of ship and waterway they work on. For example, workers on deep sea vessels need more complex training than those whose ships travel on a river.

Extra Requirements

Mariners working on ships with U.S. flags usually need a TSA Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Mariners who work on ships traveling on the open ocean require USCG-verified training for the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) endorsement. Most mariners also must have a U.S. Coast Guard-issued Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
