Additional Information

To become a flight navigator in the air force and navy, you must be a commissioned officer. The Marine Corps, however, allows enlisted personnel to serve as navigators. And the army does not have flight navigators per se. It calls them army aviators, although they have the same skills and duties as flight navigators. They, too, are commissioned officers.

You can become a commissioned officer in three ways. You can attend a training academy. You can also attend an officer training school after graduating from college. And you can join the Reserve Officer Training Corps while in college.

General and specific air navigation training follows. Its main component includes a five- to six-month stint at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. Primary training takes place at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. After winning your wings at Randolph, you head to various locations for additional training on the type of aircraft they will navigate. The total length of training is 18 months.

You should also have a strong sense of spatial awareness and excellent decision-making skills.
