Generally, a high school diploma is required at the entry level. The flour miller receives lots of on-the-job training.

Nancy Edwards is a chemist in the flour milling research group for the Canadian Grain Commission. "To become head miller or production manager, one would need further education," she says.

She recommends that anyone interested in this field study math and physics.

Barry McConnell is the operations manager at a milling company. He says that you must have at least a high school diploma to work at his company. "We generally train starting at the bottom." That means beginning as a cleaner and working your way up with experience.

The program recommended for both American and Canadian students is the international grains program at Kansas State University. Another recommended course is the correspondence course in flour milling that is offered by the Association of Operative Millers.
