Real-Life Decision Making

Barry McConnell is operations manager at a mill. He says a miller must be able to make decisions.

"There's a problem with a piece of equipment and you have to decide if you fix it yourself or shut the plant down. If the miller can't make the decision, then he must call his manager to make the decision," says McConnell.

McConnell says millers are encouraged to make the decisions themselves.

Guy Shoemaker is president of a flour milling organization. He says one possible scenario is that a critical air filter could fail.

You are a miller at ABC Milling Co. During your shift, an air filter is down. This poses a major problem. The air filter makes it possible for your mill to meet environmental regulations for air quality.

If you don't come up with a solution right away, your customers will not get their flour deliveries. As a result of your problem, they will have to shut down their bakeries.

What do you do?
