Additional Information

High school students interested in entering the field should consider a degree in home economics -- or what many universities now call human ecology. Courses in psychology and sociology are also recommended.

"Virtually everyone I know -- 90 percent of them -- aren't only dealing with the fashion perspective, but also the empowerment perspective," says Karen Brunger, vice-president of education for the Association of Image Consultants International.

Courses in poise and etiquette could also be an advantage, but Brunger says it isn't necessary. More important would be courses in public speaking and general business management, because you'll probably be your own boss.
