Additional Information

Those seriously considering biotechnology will need at least a master's degree.

"The common trend I see the most is that in order to move up in this, one must have at minimum a master's degree," confirms Catherine Rodriguez. "Entry-level positions are limited and post-doctorate and PhD degrees are favored over those with even a master's degree."

To start, however, entry-level positions can be acquired if the applicant is either enrolled in a degree program or has a bachelor's degree in a relevant field (such as biology or chemistry). Even high school graduates with the right skills can sometimes land a job.

"Education requirements vary," says Siobhan Williams. "They range from high school graduates who have an excellent command of the English language and are able to follow strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to having a master's degree or PhD to conduct the actual research."

In addition to science backgrounds and education, other skills that are in demand include communications and management.
