Real-Life Math

Sports photographers don't use math to do everything. It's not like a photographer needs numbers to be artistic. However, math does come up from time to time.

A photography store is having a grand opening sale. Among their many tempting offers is this amazing film roll giveaway. They're giving away a free roll of film for every $75 you spend.

Wow, that's a good deal. And certainly one you can use. There hasn't been a lot of freelance work lately and money is kind of tight. You're here to buy a camera, but you can afford nothing more.

Item: Sunny XB-15 camera
Price: $1,475.99

You've got your heart set on the Sunny XB-15 camera. If the Sunny costs $1,475.99, how many rolls of free film will you get?

Next, figure out how much money you've saved. Each roll of film is worth $3.99.

"Sure, there's math in photography," says sports photographer Charlie Pruett. "You got everything from the complex -- the ratio of light to darkness -- to the simple, where you're thinking about how much money your equipment is going to cost."
