Real-Life Math -- Solution

To determine the number of entries that must be cut, you must first determine the amount of space that you will have available.

4 pages x 2 columns per page = 8 columns

Then you must determine the number of lines available.

8 columns x 32 lines = 256 lines

You have 256 lines on which you can place entries.

Now, to determine how many entries you will need to cut, you need to figure your total lines of entries.

1 x 198 single lines = 198
2 x 37 double lines = 74
3 x 9 triple lines = 27

198 + 74 + 27 = 299

Now, subtract your total number of lines available from the number of entries that you have found. What remains is the number of entries that you must cut.

299 entries - 256 available lines = 43 lines that must be cut

You need to cut 43 lines to make your index fit the space you have been given to build an index.
