Insider Info

It's difficult to pinpoint the number of indexers. Catherine Fox is an indexer in Stockton Springs, Maine. "There are so many different niches in publishing that it would be very hard to say for sure."

Larry Bonura is an indexer in Richardson, Texas. "Information about annual salaries for indexers is hard to find," he says. "Between $31,200 and $45,000 annually, depending on the area you work in."

Fox feels that opportunities are fair. "The well-trained core of freelancers seems to have been fairly stable over the past 10 years," she says. "But I believe it is becoming more and more difficult to enter the field."

Earnings and employment information from the U.S. Department of Labor is not available for this field at this time.
