According to the American Horse Council, of the 6.9 million horses in the U.S., 725,000 are involved in racing and race breeding. In addition, 941,400 people are involved in the race horse industry.

"It's somewhat difficult for people to get started in this," says Loren Bolinger. He is a pedigree analyst in New Mexico. "Once a person becomes known and has success, the value of their work goes up and it can be lucrative."

Because many pedigree analysts work as consultants, their earnings depend upon the amount of work done and their reputation. "You can make a handsome living if you market yourself properly," says pedigree analyst Les Brinsfield.
