Education Level

Education training and experience are required at different levels for success in different occupations.

Insider Info

Additional Information

Experts recommend getting out in the field and doing some nursing before deciding to become a nurse practitioner.

"I would advise any nursing student interested in this career to gain a variety of nursing experience before entering nurse practitioner training," says nurse practitioner Jacquelyn Dippert.

After receiving your nursing training, competition for nurse practitioner programs may be fierce. "If you're just starting out now, the more training you allow for yourself, the better your options will be. I see the profession moving toward master's degrees," says NP Linda Jones.

A solid background in science is necessary, so be sure to include biology and chemistry in your high school curriculum. Strong people skills are also important.

Consider volunteering in a hospital while in school. That will give you a good handle on what your work environment will be like.

Extra Requirements

There are several different certifications for nurse practitioners, including those available from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), and the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB). Each of these certifications requires periodic renewal.
