Real-Life Decision Making

Criminal investigators rely on fingerprint experts to provide key evidence that could lead to the conviction of suspects. Because fingerprints are unique to each individual, having a matching set of prints can be convincing evidence to show a judge or jury.

You are a fingerprint expert working with prosecutors on a murder case. You have a set of partial prints from the crime scene. None of the half-dozen prints are complete. You have the suspect's prints as well.

Prosecutors are ready to move forward with the case. They are waiting for you to give them the go-ahead, to tell them that the match is close enough to put the suspect at the scene of the crime.

You are working late in the lab. Your goal is to be able to say that there is less than a one in one million chance that the prints are not those of the suspect.

But because the prints are not perfect samples, you are only able to get the odds down to one in 1,000. Still pretty good odds, but much more difficult to defend in court.

What do you do?
