Additional Information

Almost all states require trappers to have a license and take courses in trapping education. They cover humane trapping technology, safety, wildlife biology, proper pelt preparation and the latest in government guidelines. Trappers who work in animal control must also have a separate license for that activity.

"In most of our states, trapping is more regulated than buying and driving an automobile," says Steve Greene. He is the director of marketing for the National Trappers Association.

But all these formal regulations and courses will not teach how to trap. "No book can give you practical experience," says Bob MacQuay, who works with a fur auction house.

"Most people start trapping because their father or grandfather did, and they learn by experience, by helping these people. It's like growing up on a family farm."
