Criminologists typically have an MA or a PhD in a field such as criminology, forensic science or sociology. "Research skills are critical," says Les Smith. He is the criminal justice manager at a county administrator's office in Fort Worth, Texas.

"I predict that graduate schools will eventually offer criminal justice administration degrees equivalent to a master's in business administration [MBA]," says Smith.

Some are available to those with just a bachelor's degree, but they are limited.
