Mary Courteau became the general manager of a small grocery store in 1989. "Even though you can be a successful grocer with a high school degree, the technology of the industry is changing," she says.

Her advice? "Learn computers. Get a business degree. Read, read, read!"

Courtney Lawrence is the marketing coordinator for a produce store. She says helpful classes for this career are "accounting, retail management, purchasing, computers, public relations, human resources, marketing and advertising."
