About This Career

Intelligence specialists play a key role in ensuring that military operations are planned using the most accurate, current information about enemy forces and capabilities. They oversee efforts to collect, exploit, develop, analyze, and produce intelligence information for dissemination to key military leaders and consumers worldwide. The results of their work are used to develop targets and provide situational awareness to operations personnel and key leadership. Intelligence specialists may focus on one type of intelligence information, such as signals or human intelligence, or may consolidate all sources into usable products.

This career is part of the Government and Public Administration cluster National Security pathway.

A person in this career:

  • Supervises, performs, or coordinates collection management, analysis, production, processing, and dissemination of strategic and tactical intelligence
  • Compiles intelligence information and disseminate data through media, such as plots, briefings, messages, reports, and publications; maintains intelligence libraries
  • Performs advanced measurements on communication and non-communications signals using various tactical data processing equipment
  • Captures, correlates, and fuses technical, geographical, and operational intelligence information
  • Conducts in-depth analysis of communications characteristics and target tactics, techniques, and procedures
  • Assesses electronic warfare (EW) risks and vulnerabilities and recommends countermeasures; assesses friendly capabilities and missions in EW terms
  • Conducts and supervises investigations of individuals, organizations, installations, and activities to detect, identify, assess, counter, exploit, and neutralize threats to national security
  • Reviews, edits, translates, and exploits foreign documents; may act as an interpreter/translator for intelligence matters and materials
  • Performs initial analysis of enemy foreign propaganda products and other media
  • Assists in determining significance and reliability of incoming information; assists in integrating incoming information with current intelligence holdings and prepares and maintains the situation map
