Real-Life Math

Math is present in almost all the work acoustical engineers do. Some say they use math not only every day, but also every hour.

Complex formulas can help these engineers predict how sound will behave, for instance. But much of the math involves estimating.

You're an acoustical engineer working on a new multi-purpose arena. The arena will measure 120,000 square feet in all.

Of that, 5,000 feet will be backstage and 7,500 feet will be utility areas. Backstage and utility areas are places where the acoustics aren't as important.

You are preparing a cost estimate for the project. You want to figure out how much the construction contractor will have to spend on acoustical ceiling tiles.

Each of the tiles measures 4 square feet and costs $18. How much will need to be built into the budget for acoustic tiles?
