Additional Information
Since so many different careers use photomicrography skills, education
requirements for the field vary greatly. In addition to a college degree in
photography, entry-level positions in scientific photography may require a
background in the things being photographed, such as industrial products or
botany.
According to photomicrographer Ron Neumeyer, a scientific background is
not a prerequisite to employment in this career. "In today's world, a photomicrographer
need not be a scientist. There are many schools across North America that
offer technical degrees in photography. I suspect most graduates are not scientists."
For most positions, though, a scientific background is required. Photomicrographer
Michael Davidson agrees, recommending "a strong background in chemistry, physics
and biology, with as much emphasis on materials as is possible."
As positions are cut, especially in the academic sector, people specializing
in photomicrography are finding it necessary to combine their chosen field
with others, such as biology, research and teaching.
