Insider Info

Additional Information

There is no one single pathway to becoming a film director. Talent, experience and business insight are very important. It helps to have a college diploma, university degree or some formal training. A major advantage of film school is that you're completely involved in directing as a way of life. However, film school can be very expensive.

Lucasfilm, George Lucas's production company, offers internships three times a year for several months. The Directors Guild of America offers a two-year assistant director program.

Shawn Watson is a producer. He advises that you get involved with people in the industry. "The best way to become a director...would be...to join one of the organizations."
