Additional Information

A college degree in a sports-related field isn't necessary in order to play professional football. However, the NFL appreciates the importance of an education.

"When I came out of college, you had to be in school for four years. A couple of years ago, the NFL changed that policy, so now players can come out after one or two years of college," says Rich Campbell, a former quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

Attending a college with an excellent football program increases your chances of getting noticed by a scout. Scouting companies work with some NFL teams to recruit new players. Some teams are independent and do it on their own.

The scouting companies cover over 700 colleges and universities and make recommendations to the clubs.
