So how do you become an information officer?

Generally, information officers are former journalists. The industry is also looking for people with backgrounds in advertising, marketing and communications.

Somebody who makes a good journalist would make a good information officer, says Jeff Gaulin. He worked as a daily newspaper reporter before going into PR.

"The best type of journalist would also be the best type of PR professional," he says. "Somebody who knows how to cultivate contacts. Somebody who knows how to ask questions. Somebody who knows how to write responses around tough issues."

But others disagree.

Christine Smith teaches corporate communications. "The teaching of PR has to take into account the technology," she says.
