Beyond High School

Here's a list of programs that you should consider if you're interested in this career:

Education Level

Education training and experience are required at different levels for success in different occupations.

Post-secondary training, plus on-the-job training

For musical instrument repairers and tuners, employers prefer people with post-high school training in music repair technology. Many musical instrument repairers and tuners begin learning their trade on the job as assistants or apprentices, working with an experienced repairer.

Insider Info

Additional Information

Many band instrument repair technicians go through formal training to learn their craft -- community colleges can offer related programs. If you are in high school, take as many music courses as possible.

Many repairers also learn the craft through informal apprenticeship arrangements. Others teach themselves through manuals or correspondence courses.

If you're looking for a program specifically in this area, you'll find there aren't very many institutions to choose from, however.

Professional associations offer related training to members. Contact them for details.

Extra Requirements

Registered Piano Technician certification is available from the Piano Technicians Guild.
