Real-Life Math

"Probably the most routine 'number aspect' of my job," says Steve Kealy, greens superintendent of a golf course in Seattle, Washington, "is the application of pesticide or fertilizer."

Following the instructions on the pesticide label is very important. "Sums come into calculating the area of turf you are going to treat, and exactly how much pesticide to use during the application," explains Kealy.

You want to calculate how much pesticide you need to treat 30,000 square feet of turf. The pesticide label says that the mixture is based on this formula:

3 oz. of pesticide to be mixed with 2 gallons of water to treat 1,000 square feet of turf

How much pesticide should you mix to treat 30,000 square feet?
