Pipefitters are usually required to complete a five-year apprenticeship program that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction. To be accepted, applicants must be 18 years old and physically fit. Some apprenticeship programs may require a high school diploma.

Credit may be given for previous military training in plumbing and pipefitting.

Extra Requirements

Some states require pipefitters to be licensed; they may even require a special license to work on gas lines. Licensing typically requires an exam, work experience, or both. Contact your state’s licensing board for more information.
