Real-Life Decision Making

Bruce is an elderly man complaining of severe headaches. Although he suffered epilepsy in his youth, he has not had a seizure since he was 15, over 70 years ago! In spite of this, you are concerned for him.

You believe that Bruce must either go on medication or get tested. You have a problem, though -- it seems the man doesn't like tests. He doesn't like the discomfort that can sometimes accompany testing.

Indeed, there is discomfort in the tests you would be administering him. The first test can cause mild discomfort when a needle is inserted into the muscle. The second test makes use of small electric pulses to the leg or arm nerves, light flashes in the eyes or small sound pops into the ear. That can make an already uncomfortable patient even more uncomfortable -- and annoyed!

You could avoid upsetting Bruce by simply having him put on drugs. On the other hand, tests could pinpoint his problem.

What do you do?
