Insider Info

Additional Information

Drilling foreman Joey Roth says while having an engineering degree isn't necessary for being a driller or drilling supervisor, it is certainly beneficial. "A lot of drilling foremen don't have an engineering degree," she says. "I would recommend it to anyone getting this job."

Randy Smith, owner of a drilling school in Houston, says few drillers go to school before getting jobs with companies. He says usually a recruit is hired and then trained at the company's expense. However, he notes that there are various correspondence courses offered by his and other schools.
