According to circulation manager Kate MacDougall, there is no specific educational background required. Circulation managers could have degrees in English, marketing or journalism, for example. Various colleges include circulation management courses in communications programs or publishing programs.

Circulation manager Douglas Glazer says there is no organization specifically for circulation managers in the U.S. Many belong to the Direct Marketing Association or the Fulfillment Management Association.

The Direct Marketing Association operates an education branch and sometimes provides various training events.
