Insider Info

Additional Information

In gemstone cutter Ron Campbell's opinion, there is only one way to learn gemstone cutting. "There are no manuals, books or classes that you can attend to learn this art. It comes strictly by experience and the seat-of-your-pants courage and confidence in yourself to take on the task and a solid knowledge of gem material."

There are some classes and seminars available, however. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) periodically offers them.

Some cutters offer mentoring or workshops. Lauren Stacey, after watching a local gemstone cutter for a few weeks, taught himself. He demonstrates the art at seminars.
