"Gem cutting can be a very stressful job. A stone worth thousands of dollars could become worthless in a matter of seconds if one is not careful," says Jeff White.

"One particularly stressful experience that comes to mind happened about six months ago. I was working on a very expensive stone, and it looked like a major flaw that I had originally thought [could be cut out] would end up in the stone. Not only that, but it would be in the worst possible place: directly under the table [the large facet on top of the stone that one looks down through]."
