Additional Information

There is no formal educational path into language assessment.

A degree in literature or the social sciences will get you started, says Adriana Parau. She is the coordinator of a language assessment center.

A certificate and experience in teaching English to speakers of other languages also helps. Of course, so does a knowledge of other languages, says Parau. She is a native Romanian who also speaks German.

But this may not be mandatory, she says. Sometimes it actually does not help to know the language of clients because it creates a situation that is not typical of day-to-day life.

Certification requirements in the U.S. vary from state to state.
