Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

Keep working with your client

You are a life coach just starting out in the business. Every client you have is very important to you. One of your clients confesses to you during a session that he has been thinking about harming himself.

You decide to keep working with him to set goals for positive change. You ignore the little voice in your head telling you to refer him to a therapist, as the International Coach Federation (ICF) code of ethics demands.

For a few sessions it seems that things are progressing well with your client. But one week you phone him for your scheduled session. There is no answer. You continue to call back all week and there is no answer.

You continue to call back to check up on your client. Weeks turn into months until one day the phone number is out of service. You don't know what happened. It keeps you up at night.

Coaches who join the ICF commit to the ethics and goals that the ICF outlines. The ICF strives to divide "real" coaches from people who just say they are coaches. ICF member coach Danny Freedman says there are no licensing rules as far as coaching goes. But, he chooses to commit to the ICF's standards.
