Real-Life Math

You are part of an international team of researchers studying the endangered mountain gorilla. There are fewer than 650 of these primates left living in the Congo highlands.

Before you leave to go on your trip to research the gorillas, you meet with a British researcher. She tells you that male gorillas usually stand 1.7 meters tall and weigh between 140 and 180 kg. Females stand 1.5 meters tall and weigh approximately 90 kg.

Unfortunately, you don't use the metric system to measure height and weight.

"It's very important for primate researchers to have a strong background in math," says Deborah Fouts. She is a primate researcher. "You need to analyze data and be educated in statistics. The information you use can become extremely sophisticated."

1. How much do male and female mountain gorillas weigh in pounds?

2.How tall are the male and female gorillas in inches? Remember:
2.2 pounds = 1 kilogram
39.37 inches = 1 meter
