Real-Life Math -- Solution

As the packaging engineer for Jumping Juice company, you have been asked to design a smaller package for their newest product, one that will appeal to kids.

Your idea is a mini can. It's 2 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches tall.

Question: How much juice does it hold?

Volume = (Radius squared) x (pi or 3.14) x (Height)

Radius is half of the length across, so half of 2 inches is 1.

Volume = (1 x 1) x 3.14 x 3.5
Volume = 1 x 3.14 x 3.5
Volume = 3.14 x 3.5
Volume = 11 cubic inches

To translate the number of cubic inches into ounces, multiply by 0.554.

11 cubic inches x 0.554 ounces per cubic inch = 6 ounces

Your can will hold 6 ounces.
