Real-Life Communication

Although it takes a lot of technical know-how and a solid understanding of science and math in order to succeed as a packaging engineer, good communication skills are important, too.

Bruce Harte is the director of a school of packaging. "Success is often dependent upon how good the individual is at communicating information to others," he says. "This includes both oral and written communications in the way of reports, memos, letters, presentations and the ability to work in a team format."

You are a packaging engineer for one of the largest cookie companies in the country. You take great pride in your work, and you love to share your enthusiasm for packaging science. As such, you often speak to junior high and high school students about the importance of the packaging profession.

You have been invited to a local high school to give a 30-minute speech, and you really want to inform this group and inspire them to think about a career in packaging, so you'll have to grab their attention.

Write an outline for this motivational speech.
