Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You recommend that all your clients purchase many of these new designs.

The reason you've been hired is to give your opinion, after all. "Designers and merchants are busy people," says Jayne Mountford. She is a fashion forecaster. "They don't have the time to study the trends, and count on you to make decisions for them."

In general, these clients want to see what basis you have for making decisions. They want to see surveys and evidence that back up your claims.

However, they also rely on your subjective opinion. "It's all about reputation," says Mountford. "If they trust your opinion, then they will go along with your decisions."

Which is all the more reason you want to be careful you don't tarnish your reputation by making poor predictions. You'd better think again before recommending the latest fashions to businesswomen. Or you might consider only putting a few of these designs into stores to see how they sell.
