Real-Life Math -- Solution

You've been sent to the suppliers to pick up a pump that will match the pressure and flow rate specifications needed for your hydraulic actuator. You have 3 pumps to choose from, listed as A, B and C.

But you won't know which pump to use until you've figured out what pressure and flow rate your hydraulic actuator calls for:

Pressure

First of all you figure out the pressure for the pump you need:

Pressure = Force / Area
Pressure = 300 lbs. / pi x 1 inch squared
Pressure = 300 lbs. / 3.14
Pressure = 95.5 lbs. per inch squared

Flow Rate

Now you have to figure out its flow rate:

Flow rate = Velocity x Area
Flow rate = 12 inches per second x pi x 1 inch squared
Flow rate = 37.68 inches cubed per second

You need a pump that will have a pressure of 95.5 lbs. per inch squared, and a flow rate of 37.68 inches cubed per second.

You would choose pump C from the list as it fits all your specifications. Pump C has 96 lbs. per inch squared pressure, and a flow rate of 38 inches cubed per square inch. If you want an extra challenge, try converting the flow rate from inches cubed per second to gallons per minute.
