Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Explaining why exercise is important, and then motivating clients to stick to their workout schedule, is a key part of a personal trainer's job.

"Personal training is one-on-one teaching, guiding and motivating. It is important to be able to explain to each client exactly what is expected of them in terms of exercise performance and execution. Should a client not be motivated, or perform poorly, the trainer must be able to diagnose the problem and rectify it," says trainer Cynthia Lauren.

Here are some things you could tell Rollie:

  1. Start with small, manageable goals. Don't expect to lose 20 pounds overnight.
  2. Start substituting healthy foods for fatty ones. For instance, instead of munching on a candy bar, try eating a low-fat power bar or whole-grain bar.
  3. Do some exercise every day. Even a short walk around the block can make a big difference.
  4. Learn to read nutrition labels. That "low-fat" food may have more calories than you think!
  5. Give yourself rewards. Celebrate losing weight, gaining muscle and getting healthy!
  6. Remember the benefits. Physically fit people live longer, sleep better, have better stress management and can participate in more physical activities.
