Real-Life Decision Making

Mechanical engineers are constantly making tough decisions that affect their work. "We're always weighing one option over the other, deciding which would be the best decision for the environment, our firm and our budget," says mechanical engineer Tanya Forester.

You are a mechanical engineer working as a member of the project management team on the construction of a new high-tech boiler. You have been given the responsibility of disposing of 60,000 gallons of waste.

This waste is nothing to fool with, because it contains a chemical called ethylene diamene tetra acidic acid (EDTA) which would pick up natural heavy metals if released into the environment. Eventually, the waste would leach into the water supply, causing potential danger to both humans and wildlife. It's hazardous stuff and you want to get rid of it safely.

You call a couple of waste disposal companies for cost estimates on the pickup and disposal of this waste. When two of the companies come back with their quotes, you're shocked by the incredible price difference. One says it will cost you $70,000 to dispose of the waste. The other bid for the same job is much lower -- $35,000 -- half the price of the first company's bid!

What do you do?
