Real-Life Math

Many cosmetologists find that their days involve a series of small mathematical problems. "Math is something that is used every day in cosmetology, and knowing math is very important," says Kristin Ploof. She is a cosmetologist in Rochester, New York.

You run your own salon. As a cosmetologist, you offer a variety of services to your clients. The salon is a small operation, and you have a loyal client base.

Your client wants her hair colored. You determine what color she would like. You decide to mix half dark auburn, one quarter light auburn and one quarter copper sun to create the best color for her. The color/developer ratio is 1:2.

Your client has short hair, and you will need about six ounces of a mixture of color and developer to do the job.

How much of each product, including developer, do you need to make six ounces of the mixture?
