Real-Life Communication

You're a dance teacher at a school for the arts. It's time to prepare report cards for your students. You must include written comments about your students in addition to their marks. This is always a tough time for you. You like to compliment the students on their strong points. But it's a more delicate issue to point out students' weaker points and offer ways to improve.

You have a student named Josh who is especially sensitive. He shows a lot of promise as a dancer, but his movements lack grace. He also has confidence problems when it comes to working with the group. However, he did really well in his written theory assignments. He also choreographed a fabulous hip hop routine that he and another student performed.

You must decide what to write in Josh's report card. You want to see him continue to dance, but you also want him to work on his problem areas. To succeed as a performer, he needs to come out of his shell.

Communication is incredibly important, says Donna Moreau. She's a dance instructor and president of a dance teachers' association.
