Underwater Welder

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Decision Making

You are an underwater welder working on the West Coast. The mountains and terrain are so rugged that many areas are inaccessible by road. This means that ferries are used to transport people.

For each of these routes, the ferries must be safe and in good repair. The docking stations must also be in order. For the new route that is being put in, an emergency ferry landing is also required.

Before the new ferry can be launched, the emergency landing must be completed. As everyone is anxious for the ferry to start, the emergency landing project has been fast-tracked. It must be done as soon as possible.

You are a welder working on the project and feel the pressure to work quickly. This morning, you are welding joints together. It is the same work you have been doing for the past week. Everything appears to be in order.

You do one safety check. Everything is functioning well. It is customary to double-check. But you have been working in this same spot for a week without incident, and your first safety check revealed no problems.

What do you do?
